Giant-Size Doctor 13!
Here’s the original cover sketch for the Doctor 13 collection that hits stores tomorrow, September 19. I can see how DC might be gun-shy about the image, but the idea still cracks me up.
To celebrate the release, Brian Azzarello and I have done a series of candid and sometimes downright goofy interviews reflecting on the project, comics, music, and life in general. Bored yet? You will be!
Check it out tomorrow morning, starting with our friends at Blog@Newsarama. The interviews will be spread throughout the internet, with a new installment being posted on a different site every hour or so. Don’t miss this senses-shattering web event! Excelsior!
Part 1 & 2: Blog@Newsarama
Part 3: The Beat!
Part 4: Silver Bullet Comics
Part 5: Comic Bloc
Part 6: The Pulse
Part 7: Broken Frontier
Part 8: Comics Should Be Good!
Part 9: UGO
Thanks to ALL the participating sites, and also to Alex Segura at DC for coordinating all this chaos!

Thank you Brian and Cliff for giving us such a great dialog about Architecture and Morality.
It was fantastic read!

Glad you enjoyed it. I don’t think Brian’s ever done such a long and detailed interview, so it was a great send-off for the book.

Great interview. You both deserve a lot of credit for really making a wonderful book. It was a lot of fun to read and it sounds like a lot of fun to create. There are few books that make a reader smile anymore or are over-the-top, but this did.
So really, thanks a lot for beautiful art that matched a fantastic story.

Great idea with the interview. I hate it when I see that a comic creator I love is doing a round of interviews on comic sites and they all read the exact same way — different interviewers, the exact same answers. This is one long interview with a large variety of questions. Score.
Also, I loved Dr. 13 in Seven Soldiers and Traci in Blue Beetle, but had waited to read the this volume that bridged the two together. I was not disappointed.

The interview took a couple hours a night over several days. Certainly the longest one I’ve ever done, but it was a lot of fun to go back and forth with Brian. I, too, hate seeing the same questions over and over, but I don’t think anyone will be asking me about breast implants anytime soon. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for being with us the first time around, David. I think it reads well in the collected format, but part of the thrill with this was the wait between the weird chapters. But it seems like there are a lot of new readers that are getting a kick out of it, too.

I love your ink-sketch style of the original cover. I guess you went straight to inks, or maybe you used a digital art package. Could you give some technical details of how working that way differs from pencilling?
Much appreciated

FWIW, I did suggest ComicsNexus.com as one of the hosts!
Richard, that piece was done “traditionally,” though I did ink it very quickly with a rather fat brush pen.

Wow, that was a lot of fun, certainly worthy of all the accolades it’s been getting. Nice work.
One question: what’s up with that sketch of the Jimmy Olsen (I think?) monster at the end?
Comment from Cliff

Thanks, Jeffrey!
Jimmy is from an alternate version of the pencils, which of course, we didn’t use.

That was a fantastic and frankly candid interview, free from so much BS and soft-stepping that happens in these sorts of things, and almost as much to read as the comic itself.
DR. 13 was one of my very favorite books to come out in recent memory. But unless I missed something, I guess I *was* kinda hoping to hear if the rumors were true that certain writers were a little cheezed off by this story. But I suppose at some point, discretion is the wisest policy.
That said, it was fun to see Geoff Johns return the jab (I think good-naturedly?) in BOOSTER GOLD # 2.

The story behind the conception of the series was great. I can only imagine the shock it must have been when you two found out they would collect it into a trade paperback.

I loved this story to death — much amusement and joy to be had from it, even if I frowned slightly at the portrayal of Captain Fear — but in terms of the story and setting, hey, okay. (Captain Fear was due an attempt at rehabilitation, but the idiot writer tinkering with it has wandered off to write and direct other things. Writers can be such an ADHD lot.)
Anyway, it’s firmly in place as one of my all-time favorite comics at this point. I’d cheerfully buy another Dr. Thirteen tale from the two of you.

Any truth to the rumor that there might be a Traci 13 mini sometime in the future? I know John Rogers enjoyed the character enough to include her in Blue Beetle.

Team 13 showing up in Booster Gold #2 was a very funny “retort,” and frankly, well-deserved. Kudos to Geoff for having such a great sense of humor.
I did hope they’d put the story into a trade paperback, if only because of Brian’s involvement. I’m thrilled with how it all turned out.
I don’t know anything about a Traci mini, but I think it’s a great idea.

well, with Booster Gold #3, Johns and Jurgens strike again. nice Anthro jacket.
here’s your challenge: a sketch of the entire Dr. 13 crew in Mr. Terrific-style jackets.
or else Dan will beat you to it!
