“Don’t give a damn ’bout my bad reputation…”

Inspired by a late-night viewing of The Runaways, and partly an exercise to see if I could make star-spangled pants and Wonder Woman go together. The idea started with Wonder Woman (I briefly entertained using an Ian Curtis Batman) but the idea of an all-girl rock band with Black Canary, Zatanna and Batgirl seemed too good to pass up.
The original black and white art will be auctioned off at Heroescon this weekend, June 3-5, so please come visit one of the best comic conventions in the country. It’s a fantastic family show with great guests and excellent programming, and it’s one of my personal favorites. Hope to see you there.
Next week, I’ll be posting sketches from the show over on my Tumblr account. I will probably crosspost those images, since I like reading your comments here, but please let me know if you prefer one format over the other.

[...] Artist Cliff Chiang watched The Runaways and then drew this, and our lives are now that much more complete. For the record, that’s Wonder Woman as Joan Jett, Black Canary asCherie Currie, Zatanna as one of six possible bassists, and Batgirl (with facepaint in an homage to The Dark Knight Returns‘ Sons of Batman?) as Sandy West. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Wonder Woman’s lasso reinterpreted as sound equipment either. [...]

Thanks for posting this. It’s really just the kind of pick-me-up I needed with the current state of the DCU and the news of the future one. :(
(And while here, thirding as a print! I’d love to see this one in a larger size than the other 12 Inch Remix and Atomic Bombshells ones, as well!)

Thanks, everyone! So glad to see how people are responding to the image. For me, I was thinking of how inspirational female rock musicians are to young girls, and how female superheroes do the same.
It’d be pretty fun to do some other bands with different lineups. Maybe I will get to draw that Ian Curtis Batman!

Awesome. So, this band should definitely just be called Star-Spangled Pants. How about on the next one, a contest to name the band with the winner taking home a print?

You got me thinking: back during his days with the original Teen Titans, Dick Grayson had a bit of a music hobby, specializing in guitar.
Now that he’s “Batman-Gotham”, he’s got less time for the music but more need for that kind of blowing off steam…
