Neil Young’s Greendale – UPDATED

greendalecvr.jpgOriginally posted June 9, 2010. After more than 4 years in the making, Neil Young’s Greendale goes on sale today in comic shops. It’s hard to believe that I’ve spent nearly 2 years working in some form on this book, and it’s now finally in print, available for people to read and hopefully enjoy. I’ve talked about this project quite a bit in the last few weeks, mostly to newspapers and websites which I’ll link to in the coming days, and there’s not much left for me to say that you can’t read somewhere else. So I’d like to simply express my gratitude and admiration for all my collaborators. Thanks to Karen and Pornsak for their generosity and patience, to Josh for his energy and collaborative spirit, to Todd and Dave for their skill and experience, to Pamela and David for their tireless efforts, and lastly, to Neil for his vision. It’s been an honor.

Greendale will be available in comic stores this week, and in bookstores on June 15th. Please come back tomorrow, when I’ll post some of the character sketches I did in preparation for the book.

There will be a special Greendale signing and art show on Friday, June 18 at Rocketship in Brooklyn.

Congratulations, Cliff! The preview copy you had at Heroes looked stunning. I’ll definitely be picking up a copy today at my LCS.

Got it this morning. It looks so awesome. I have not read it yet but just opening it up and flipping through it was incredible. Love how it was colored to look like it was an old printing with “faded” ink and yellowed paper. Just the overall design of this thing is so classy. Look forward to reading it.

Wonderful book, Cliff!
I loved the art, and the colors give it a timeless look.just beautiful.
Will you be selling your original artwork for this book?

Thanks, Adam! Drawing characters dancing is always tricky, so I’m glad you liked that one.

JMann, still trying to decide whether to sell the art yet. Thanks for the interest!

Dammit, you’re gonna make me look past my hatred of Neil Young and pick this up aren’t you? I can never pass up your art. *sigh*

Hi Cliff,

I second Colin’s emotion with regard to your deserved acclaim. This weekend will be quite the busy one for me. I intend to appear at your Rocketship store appearance, a small convention in Jersey on Saturday and another signing at Midtown comics late Monday afternoon. Wish I could afford to live in New York.

Anyway….The real reason I decided to drop you a line today is to ask a couple of questions.

1) Regarding the store appearance….I know that you typically charge a premium fee on convention sketches, but I’m wondering…I’m planning to bring two hardcovers- Greendale and the latest Gotham Central- and am curious to know if you’d be willing to do a couple head sketches in my books if asked politely?

2) With regard to that beautiful Zatana sketch you did at Heroes con….Tell us about the rabbit, Cliff…Yes, I fully realize that my little reference to Of Mice and Men was a real groaner, but couldn’t resist it. Back to the subject at hand…When I met you at N.C., you stopped sketching that piece in order to sign a handful of books. When I commented about the size of the rabbit in the illustration, you told me that it was based upon something you’d come across on You Tube. As I have a gazillion things to do today-as I am sure that you do as well!!!- and simply don’t have the time to do it myself, I’m wondering if you or another one your enterprising you blog followers might track down and post a link to the video in question?

See you tomorrow night, Cliff. Thanks for your continued kindness to your readers throughout your creative career.

Sincerely,

Patrick Herman
