C2E2 turned out to be a solid, fun first-year show, and a wonderful opportunity to finally meet and talk to some Midwestern comics fans. It’s easy to forget that not everyone makes it to the big shows in San Diego or New York, and in the future I’m going to do my best to visit other parts of the country. Artists Alley was spacious and comfortable, and I think the organizers did a fantastic job. I’m looking forward to next year (especially if it means I can eat more pork belly at Publican). Special thanks to Jill Thompson and all the fine folks at Threadless — we announced our t-shirt project and I can’t wait to see the shirts when we debut them at San Diego Comic-Con! Thanks to everyone who came to the table. The new sketchbooks and prints were a success! I still managed to get some drawing done too, and there were a bunch of doubles this time: 2 Kitty Prydes, 2 Black Canary’s (and if I hadn’t run out of time, 2 Mockingbirds – sweet!). It was a great start to the convention season! Next stop, HeroesCon!

I love the way you draw Kitty Pryde and Lockheed!

Thanks! I know Lockheed is supposed to be more cat-like, but I can’t help but draw him like my family dog, an italian greyhound.

That Emma Frost is terrific. The Hellfire crew in back cracked me up. Great idea using their dark uniforms as a background!

Thanks!
Dunno if this’ll work, but… can the owner of the Doctor 13 sketch please get in touch with me?

Heck yeah, someone else cares about Doctor 13! …now if only DC would start caring again.
Gorgeous piece.

[...] Marvel’s character stables. Cliff Chiang has also been sketching up a storm, and, as usual, displays the results on his blog. (Speaking of Chiang, I hope you all gave this week’s issue of Brave and the Bold at least a [...]

Awesome!
Were those sketches requested by people, or did you do them in advance?

I rarely do any pieces in advance. Shows are like a drawing marathon for me, and it’s all about what you can pull out of thin air (or your ass).

Thanks for being so great at the con. You spoke with me for quite a while about the way you work, and gave me some good ideas about coloring my own work. It is wonderful to get the chance to have an in-depth discussion with such a great artist!

You’re welcome, John!

How does the covention sketching usually work? Do you have a sign up sheet or something like that and take the first 10 or 12 requests? Just curious. I’ll be in Charlotte for HeroesCon and would love to get one of these awesome sketches.

Hi Jeff! I have a list for each day (except for the last day, which I use for overflow), and I start taking names at the beginning of each day. Please find me as early as possible, since the list fills up in a matter of minutes. Good luck!

Hi Cliff,
I have a handful of questions for you today.
1) You’ve been announced as a guest at the forthcoming Heroes Con in Charlotte, N.C., a show I’m in the planning stages of attending myself. Should I wish to get one of your beautiful con sketches for myself, how much do you typically charge?
2) Quite sometime ago, you posted a sketch of your design for a potential Josie Mac collected edition. Has the DC collected editions department mentioned the possibility of publishing one as yet? Would they contact you for book design ideas if they ultimately decided to put such a book out?
3) Your recent Detective Comics cover was a particularly attractive one. My cock-eyed thought process triggered a memory of a few years past when DC announced that you and Tom Fontana were announced as the creative team for a Batman OGN. Is the project completely dead at this point? If so, were you even given a chance to read a draft of the first script? Is it possible that said project could be revived?
Thanks in advance for answering my questions. Hope to see you in Charlotte. Until then, I wish you the best, Cliff.
Sincerely,
Patrick Herman
