Brave and the Bold #33

Brave and the Bold #33 page 1Brave and the Bold #33 is on sale this week. After working on Greendale for more than a year, this is my first superhero book in quite a while. I’m trying to loosen up my inks, but it’s a slow process. Moving away from the dead line outline approach I was using before, I found some inspiration in newspaper strips like Friday Foster by Jorge Longaron and the really great Wonder Woman work by Carmine Infantino and the dearly-departed Dick Giordano, as well as other art by Jordi Bernet and Jorge Zaffino. I’m inking with the Namiki Falcon fountain pen, which feels wonderfully like an extension of my hand. The end results remind me a bit of Milo Manara, and I’m eager to see where more experimentation takes me. Speaking of experimentation, there’s an interesting little trick that writer J. Michael Straczynski cooked up later in the book to put you in the character’s POV, in the moment. When you get to the double page spread, trying folding the pages so the word balloon is whole (almost like a Mad fold-in). Let me know if it works! You can check out a 5 page preview at DC’s Source blog.

Thanks for the page preview. My first impression that there is more detail there than I’m used to seeing… and Manara was one of the first names that popped into my head! I’m looking forward to the rest of the story.

It looks great to me! Also I saw the cover in July’s Solicits for Bop #3. That looks wicked fun! Would love to see the original pen and ink of that on the blog. I hope you’ll be doing more Bop covers in the future, Cliff!

Thanks! That page is definitely one of the more detailed scenes. I like being able to show how characters live, so it was important to me to show all the little design touches in Zatanna’s bedroom.

I’ll post the BoP #3 cover when it comes out in July. It’s funny to see some people comment about it being too racy — Gail Simone loved it, so I’m sticking with her!

Too racy? Really? I don’t venture out too much on message boards so I hadn’t seen any complaints. My friends all love it. We all agree it’s playful and sexy which always makes for a great combination! I like the little rips in Black Canary’s stockings. Lady Blackhawk carries her look natuarally and I love that Helena is in dark stockings. She’s a character that oozes sex appeal without even having to try. Small things like that matter! Can’t wait to see the variant cover to #1 and bring it to Heroes to have you sign.

Beautiful work on this issue.

I just read it a moment ago and it really made me tear up. Amazing.

This would be my Eisner nomination for best single issue. Fantastic!
I would like to buy a page of art from it. Do you know when the pages will be up for sale?
Thank you!
