Army of Me
I recently drew a set of 3 Imperial Propaganda posters for the new Star Wars Galaxy 5 trading card set. I hadn’t intended to do more than one, but the ideas came fast and furious and the editor loved them all. This enlistment poster was actually based on an old war bonds poster. While using Nazi propaganda would’ve been appropriate, it was actually more engaging for me to try and create posters that cast the Empire as saviors of the galaxy, especially on the heels of the Death Star 9/11 short. The card backs also have some quotes from me in the guise of an unapologetic Imperial sympathizer. A really fun gig, and I hope to do more of these in the future. I’ll post the others when the cards go on sale next month.

Any time you do the propaganda style you seem to nail it. I love when you do stuff like this in a very specific style because you always manage to work your style into it and it still works. The other time that comes to mind was when you did that Ra’s Al Ghul poster type cover for Green Arrow Black Canary #8. Can’t wait to see the rest.

Thanks, Ramon. It’s always a lot of fun to work in other styles and grapple with the design aesthetic. It would’ve been cool to do an OBEY-style graphic too, but I like the contrast of the Empire with the kinda wonky design of American posters. If I were to do another, I’d like to homage British RAF poster designs — they’re sharp!

Any chance on this becoming available as a print after the cards are released?
As a big fan of Star Wars and retro-style art I’d love to have it on a wall.

You should email Topps about that! I gave them a giant file, so they can print a larger version of it if they want.

Yeah, it’d be awesome to see you do an OBEY type graphic, Shepard Ferrie’s style is insane.

A shirt could be interesting! I dunno about Topps’s repro rights, but perhaps an official limited-edition litho might be possible through another Lucas licensor.
